Goin down to South Park...

Blogging from Denver...

Denver is...OK. It doesn't quite stand out to me as being anything other than a typical American city. Sure, there are mountains in the background-gorgeous ones at that. But that is truly the only indication I have gotten that I am in Colorado and not Maryland. It's not like Vegas where you know you are in Vegas. Or Seattle. Or Honolulu. It's just a city.

Part of it is commercialization. It sucks to go to a new city and to have that city touting businesses like The Cheesecake Factory, Victoria's Secret, and ESPN Zone. I try to make it a point to avoid these places at all costs (with the exception of a daily Starbucks run). I prefer unique restaurants.

The Stand is playing on SciFi channel. Gary Sinese is hot. Molly Ringwald sucks. Stephen King can't act. The music is great though.

People watching in Denver is exceptional. I have seen farmers in overalls with cowboy hats that look like they are still dirty from working in the fields. There are Goths, hip-hop types, people in tuxes and slackers like me. I am impressed.

The highlight of my trip so far has been Wynkoop Brewing Company. I had read about this place on beertravelers.com and other such sites. Of notable mention is the Patty's Chile Beer, in which 3.5 lbs lbs of chiles are added to each barrel of beer. It is the one of the best beers I have ever had. The Churchyard Ale made for a nice dessert beer. A scotch ale that is sweet and alcohol-y at the same time. 'Twas lovely.

I miss my husband and baby.

I am at The Curtis Hotel in Denver. They bill themselves as a funky, boutique hotel. They forget to mention that the hot & cold water lines are reversed and the walls pretty thin. But still, you can't complain too much about a hotel that actually acknowledges its 13th floor. Not only does The Curtis acknowledge it, but they relish in it-each floor of the hotel is themed after a different genre of film and the 13th floor is horror. Posters for various horror films fill the walls-in fact, when you step out of the elevator, a voice calls out "Here's Johnny-13th floor" and the elevator doors open to reveal a poster for The Shining. There is also a cut out of either Nosferatu or Freddy Kreuger-interesting that you can't really tell them apart in profile, something I have never noticed before. There is also a Comedy Floor, Chick Flick Floor, and Sci Fi Floor among others. But you know which one I picked.

Also, the hotel staff does not put mints on your pillow for their turndown service-instead you get candy like lemon drops or Smarties. Yum.

Needless to say, I can forgive the hot & cold water.

This week, Mom and Dad are moving to Maryland. I picked up real estate guides for Colorado just in case.

So, in a nutshell: M-O-O-N. That spells Denver.

    Speaking of "The Shining"...

I flew in from Oregon last night. I got to hang out at Timberline Lodge, which is the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in the movie! They used the road also (and yes driving through it in snow is CRAZY) but I understand the interior was shot at a lodge in Canada. I'll post more about my trip in my blog later.

Also when I was flying up to Oregon on Tuesday, my stop was in Denver. Weird.
